The Mela has been organized since 1981 with a view to promote regional cultural proceedings on a national level. Every year, a new state within the country is selected as its theme. In 2017 year, Jharkhand was chosen as the theme state along with Tajikistan as the partner country. The state of Rajasthan was first selected as the theme state of the Mela in the year 1989.

Surajkund is the annual fair that showcases the finest hand-looms, handicrafts, authentic fragrances & flavors of rich Indian cuisines. As winter turns briefly into spring, a caravan of more than 400 National and State awardee craft persons from every corner of India wind their way to Surajkund. The craftpersons from SAARC Nations are also participating in the Surajkund Crafts Mela. At Surajkund Mela, the artisans’ delicate hands create the most beautiful pieces which have fascinated many through ages!

Maharashtra: 2019 Theme State

Maharashtra is not just India’s third largest state but is also one of the most visited tourist destinations in India. With the bustling and faced paced cities of Mumbai and Pune on one side and the mesmerizing hill-stations of Mahabaleshwar and Matheran on the other, Maharashtra has everything a tourist wants. The state is dotted with natural beauty like beaches, hill stations and splendid monuments and caves. Festivals here too are famous for their lavish and grand celebrations. 

The Raigarh Fort structure erected at Surajkund International Crafts Mela is a landmark monument and its essence is captured in this very replica.  The replica brings alive the captivating presence of  Raigad Fort which  is perched on the Sahyadri mountain range. An exquisite gem of the Indian history, the fort is of great pride for the Marathas and accounts to their glorious past. It is a reminder of the valor of the Marathas. The Raigad fort is not just a tourist spot, it is a sacred place of pilgrimage which holds the imprints of the grand vision of Hindavi Swarajya as cherished by Chhatrapati Shivaji.
