 Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary is in Mukundapuram Taluk of Thrissur District. Established in 1984, the sanctuary with an area of about 100 sq. kms is on the Western slopes of the Nelliyampathi hills. The forests here are tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen and the moist deciduous forests the perfect nature image.
These forests which were once extensive and extremely thick, have been over the years been denuded by continuous over exploitation. The sanctuary makes for a wide variety of flora still. All major species of fauna of peninsular India are well represented in the sanctuary. However, due to years of human interference, the fauna is sparse. Some minor wildlife and some elephants and Gaur are also seen occasionally. The sanctuary also offers trekking paths for the adventure traveller seeking nature images.
Wildlife: Malabar Whistling Thrush, Tiger, Leopard, Sloth Bear, Dhole, Nilgiri Langur, Bonnet Macaque, Elephant, Gaur, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Wild Boar, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Darter, Dabchick, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Sri Lankan Frogmouth, Raquet Tailed Drongo, Malabar Trogon, Ruby Throated Bulbul, Crested Serpent Eagle, Spot Bellied Forest Owl, Paradise Flycatcher, Indian Pitta
Adventure: Bird safari, Jungle safari, Bamboo Rafting, Birding Trail, Butterfly Safari, Nature Walk for Children, Jungle Craft, Animal Tracking, Moonlight Sonata.

Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary is easily accessible form Thrissur, which is hardly 35 kms. The nearest Railway station is in Thrissur. For those coming from North Kerala, (Wayanad, Kannur or River Nila) should come through Thrissur town and take a left from the highway at Amballur. |
