Masks alone cannot prevent the flu

Channdigarh: Most people think that wearing a mask is the only and the best protective gear against swine flu. But that’s not true. Addressing a seminar organized at law department in Panjab University on Wednesday, experts, doctors and academicians gave their views on protection from swine flu and said only wearing masks was not enough.

Chaired by PU vice-chancellor RC Sobti, the seminar, that was attended by doctors, departmental heads and members of student organizations, dispelled the notion that masks alone can prevent the flu.

Dr D Dhawan, chief medical officer, said, ‘‘Masks don’t bestow much of an advantage on the wearer. They only to add to the panic and scare that is spreading faster than the flu.’’ He added that while masks help to an extent, they don’t give 100% protection. ‘‘Instead, covering the mouth with a handkerchief or tissue with three layers could be more protective,’’ he said.

The seminar disseminated vital information on the do’s and don’ts that should be taken care of during the flu pandemic. Dr R Khullar and Dr BS Lal, the other two chief medical officers present, also gave important tips on staying away from the flu.

The basic cause of death as a result of swine flu is respiratory failure and multi-organ failure, informed Dr Vinay Kapoor, government medical specialist. ‘‘Panic should be avoided and tests should be conducted in case of symptom likes fever, cough, sore throat, diarrhoea, vomiting and difficulty in breathing,’’ said ayurvedic medical officer Dr Pravin Kwatra.

Students from different departments of PU participated in the seminar that was organized with the help of student organization leaders.

Experts say

1. A nutritious diet that includes fruits for building the immunity should be taken. The water intake should be increased.

2. One should not panic and should avoid crowded places.

3. Shaking hands, hugging and kissing socially should be avoided

4. One should keep away from people who have symptoms of the flu

5. One should try staying at his house these days and avoid multiplexes and markets

6. Air-conditioned areas should also be avoided
