The amazing depth of Chennai Super Kings came to the fore again as they fought on to live another day in the Champions League. They looked down and out with 22 to get off 10 balls and Dale Steyn steaming in. But the wet ball seemed to slip out of Steyn's hand and Dwayne Bravo banished the lollipop full-toss to the stands.
He hit two more boundaries in the next two balls and the match turned on its head. Bravo and Albie Morkel kept their heads in the last over to notch up a five-wicket-win with two balls to spare to give CSK a breath of life.
CSK had started their chase of 146 well with Mike Hussey and M Vijay looking to take charge. Hussey was his usual self, taking the quick singles and putting the pressure on Cobras attack. The big shots, too, were coming in between, and even after the departure of Vijay, things looked pretty much under control. But it was Jean Paul Duminy again who came to the party just when it mattered.
He got one to spin just a little more than expected and Hussey was left stranded mid-pitch. Suresh Raina and S. Badrinath, who have been extremely consistent for CSK, struggled on the sluggish track. While Raina played one straight back to Duminy, Badri departed giving a catch at cover, trying a lofted shot. The pressure kept increasing, but strangely Dhoni held himself back till No. 7.
Earlier, it was really going well for Cape Cobras till the end of the 16th over. JP Duminy (29 off 24 balls) and Owais Shah (45 off 38 balls) had settled in well for a final onslaught which could have taken the game away from Chennai. It looked all the more ominous in the 16th over when Shadab Jakati dropped a sitter from Duminy. But it was the Goa player who made amends to turn it around. A dangerous-looking Duminy top-edged a slower one off Albie Morkel and Jakati, running back, completed an excellent catch.
