Tourism & Environment
EuroPartners is acting as consultant on Tourism & Environment issues for the World Travel & Tourism Council, European Commission, a variety of Greek and foreign, governmental or non-governmental organisations, local authorities and companies. Travel & Tourism is one of the activities which is increasingly growing but with a significant impact on the environment and, provided that it's growth is effectively managed, it can lead the way in the achievement of sustainable development and job creation, in particular in islands or coastal zone areas.

In 1993, our company organised the first European conference on Environment and Ports, associated to the first environmental awards in Greece. This conference, combined to a companies' match-making event, had a significant success and was organised, since then annually, with the support of the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO). In 1996 the event took place in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) and in 1997 in Birmingham (United Kingdom).

In 1995, our company was selected as Tourism & Environment expert by the European Commission DG XXIII-Tourism. We worked as experts for Greece on the European Tourism & Environment Award 1995.

Since then, we collaborate on Tourism & Environment with the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). The WTTC is a global coalition of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) from all sectors of the Travel & Tourism industry, including accommodation, catering, cruises, entertainment, recreation, transportation and travel-related services. WTTC contributes actively to Travel & Tourism in drawing attention to the inter-relationships between the Environment and Travel & Tourism development, and the dependence of the Travel and Tourism industry on a quality natural environment. WTTC participated in the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and is formally recognised as the Earth Council's conduit to the Travel & Tourism industry. In 1991, as part of its mission to promote environmentally-compatible development, WTTC published the Agenda 21-Environmental Guidelines for Travel & Tourism companies. Another well-known programme of the WTTC is Green Globe, a worldwide corporate and destination management programme applying Agenda 21 principles to involve companies, communities, employees and travellers in continuous environmental improvement.

WTTC hopes to encourage the Travel & Tourism organisations to contribute and use ECoNETT (European Community Network for Environmental Travel & Tourism), a Web site developed in co-operation with the European Commission DGXXIII-Tourism and a group of four experts, among which our company.

EuroPartners therefore knows very well the environmental sector in Greece and Europe and has a database of more than 600 entries, regularly updated, keeping a close and working contact with all organisations and companies.

Most projects in Tourism & Environment are linked to coastal zones or islands (Crete Green Island for example) and include Ecos-Ouverture Med, Med Urbs, Recite and other programmes of the European Commission for NGOs, local authorities, academic and scientific institutions or private entities. Recent developments have seen the set-up of links with other countries of the region with a view to use Greece as a geographical and historical link between the European Union, the Mediterranean countries of the Middle-East and North Africa, the Eastern and Central European countries.

We are currently working on a pan-Mediterranean project for sustainable development and Tourism & Environment in islands, financed by the Recite II programme of the European Commission DG XVI, aiming at setting the guidelines and framework for the sustainable development of highly touristic islands (Kephalonia, Paros, Mykonos, Madeira and Calvia). The choice of the location is relevant since the project is aiming to recommend the correct choices to one of the most touristic regions of the world, the Mediterranean. With more than 46,000 km of coastline, the region attracts around one third of the world tourism, more than 130 million per year, on average, during the last five years.

On the other hand, the Eastern European countries consider tourism as a key issue to develop economic wealth. Travel & Tourism is becoming one of the key development issues for the above mentioned countries, some achieving spectacular results and some other trying hard to organise the sector.

Tourism is changing dramatically, leaving the "3s" formula (Sea, Sand & Sun) for a totally different concept based on environment, cultural heritage, sports and other recreational activities. This radical trend will have a significant impact on job creation and needs to be monitored carefully in order to maximise the impact of tourism on the environment and job creation.

EuroPartners has also become member of the Association of Greek Tourist Enterprises.
