Mynah, or myna, is the common name for six genera (12 species) of birds in the starling family, Sturnidae, order Passeriformes. The best known is the hill mynah, Gracula religiosa, native to India, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Its plumage is glossy black, the bill orange, and it has yellow wattles beneath the eye and on the back of the head. It measures 24-37 cm (9-11 in) in length. The mynah can be trained to mimic human speech remarkably well and is popular as a pet. Other species include the golden-crested mynah, Mino coronatus; the Papuan mynah, Mino dumontii; and the crested mynah, Acridotheres cristatellus. |
