Earth Day is a special day which is only dedicated for instilling consciousness and admiration for the Earth’s surroundings. The Earth day festival is observed on 22nd April. The Earth day 2011 festival will also fall on the same day. This day was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-Wisconsin) in the year 1970 and is celebrated across the globe annually. The first Earth Day festival was observed in the year 1970. In the Northern Hemisphere, the festival of Earth Day is observed during spring, whereas in the Southern Hemisphere, it falls during the autumn. The celebration of Earth day by United Nations happens every year during the spring equinox, approximately which falls on 20th March. This custom had been devised by a peace activist named John McConnell in 1969.
To mention specifically, the United Nations celebrated Earth Day for the first time on the spring equinox in the year 1971. This is was first time ever when United Nations indulged in Earth day festival celebration.
Now in 2011, it is exactly forty years after the first Earth Day had been celebrated. But now, inspite of all the awareness and inspiration, the Earth stands in great danger than ever. The climatic change is definitely a great challenge for us to face, but within it lies a great opportunity – an new chance for creating a sound, flourishing, and clean energy economy, not only for the time being but for the years to come. It is a long term challenge. The festival of Earth Day 2011 can turn out to be a twisting junction for advancing towards climate policy, energy efficiency, renewable energy and environment friendly jobs. The network of Earth Day is taking active action to gather loads of personal commitments which aims towards sustainability. Earth Day 2011 is of utmost importance for individuals, corporations and the governments to come together and join hands for creating a global green economy.
It is up to us to join that league of over one billion people spread across 190 countries who have geared up for the Earth Day activities.
Activities of Earth day festival
The date of Earth day falling on April 22 involves participation from all corners including outdoor performances, (be it individual or a group performance). There are different types of Earth day festival activities which include planting of trees, picking up roadside junk, arranging for various recycling programs and conservation programs, usage of recyclable containers to carry snacks and lunches. There are people who also initiate singing of petitions to the governments, to take immediate action for stopping global warming and turn around ecological devastation. There are various programs which keep coming up on television relating to environmental balance and its conservation.
