Author: Bhagwaticharan Verma - Born: 30th August 1903. Initially poetry writing but later established as novelist. Later wrote for films in Mumbai and edited a daily "navjeevan. He also worked in various stations of All India Radio. Died in 1957. Many national awards. His novel 'Chiralekha' has been into movies twice. He was also member of upper house of the Indian Parliament.

First published in 1959, this novel takes in its sweep almost half a century. The narrative is spread from 1885 ( the year when the Indian National Congress was Founded) to 1930 ( when the national movement touched its peak and unambiguously declared ‘total independence its goal). Weaving the dynamics of the emergent national sentiment into the lives of the characters the novel presents the pictures from an ongoing historical journey.

The journey takes place through a realistic narrative and reflects on the nature of social forces and political trends unleashed by the freedom movement that brought in the unprecedented democratization of social and political life in India.
