Author: Armit Lal Nagar - Born: 17th August 1916, Well known for his novels. Many awards of Indian Literary organizations. Traveled in the then USSR. Also wrote under psydoname Taslim Lakhnavi.

Written almost immediately after the Indian independence, this is an ambitious novel in the tradition of social realism. The locale is the traditional street in the downtown Lucknow, which serves as the drop in which the novelist wants to see and show the ocean of the whole country. The problems and fears of a society-feeling confidant yet a bit hesitant in the wake of the newly won independence constitute the theme, which are woven in a plot peopled with a variety of characters. This variety provides a chance to the author of documenting various life styles and parlance.

True to the craft of the social realism, the lives of the characters are quite explicitly related with the larger social development, thus proving the metaphor of the relation between the drop and the ocean.

At the end, the novel quite unambiguously expresses the author’s idea of the kind of society he would like to see emerging. The novel actually exhorts the reader to work for making the Indian independence a true success.
