The celebrated author of Tamas-the elemental darkness- tries to transcend his own creative achievement in this novel that come almost fifteen years later. He is generally known as a master of the simple, realistic narrative, but here in this novel the narrative is rather complex and employs devices other than those of the realistic description. Set in the later 19th century Punjab, the novel at one level seeks to document and explore the historical process of the Sikh rule being replaced by the British. But on a more subtle and exciting level, the novel is about the intrigues conflicts hope and confusions. The times are changing fast, and the people are sometimes excited and sometimes perplexed. The new set-up is throwing up the new social relations and new rulers at the village level.
The novel tackles the developments like the movement for women-education in a very sensitive way.
The characters are living their own lives and following their own pursuits, but something other than their social relations, is joining their destinies together. It is the colonial presence, but it is probably also the fate or maybe god in some strange way.
A novel that is as simple as it is reach with complex emotions and their catharsis
