Author: Bhishma Sahni - Born: 8th August 1915. Sahni was a teacher at various universities and also in Moscow as translator. He translated about two dozen of Russian books into Hindi. He was associated with progressive writer’s as well as Afro-Asian writer groups he is well known for his novel Tamas(Elemental Darkness) on which a successful television serial was made. He died in 2003.

Compressed in just five days and set in a big, unnamed city of the undivided Punjab, the novel is an intense exploration of the elemental darkness Tamas that had engulfed the entire South Asia an the eve of the Indian Independence.

Despite dealing with a clearly political theme; this is not a ‘political’ novel. It is focused more on the destiny of ordinary people, forced, even condemned to play the roles in the unfolding drama that is beyond their own comprehension. Inviting reader to reflect on the eternal moral dilemmas like the nature of good vs. bad non violence vs. aggression in a concrete historical context, the novel portrays a mass tragedy with remarkable restrain and dexterity.

Dealing with the theme in very sensitive manner, the novel in its intensity, sometimes reminds the reader of Dostoevsky.
