He has many hit film songs under his belt but Masakkali singer Mohit Chauhan has still not lost his fondness for music albums, saying it is an extension of his own existence.
"I believe that as an artist, music is all about your expression. I love Bollywood and singing songs for films, but there you have a story and a character to comply with. So your own album is always more personal to you than films," Chauhan told us.
"In albums there are no stories, involvement of actors or a background. The only background is of the person who has composed it. That way it is an extension of myself and my expression. It has its own enjoyment because you create your own kind of music," said the singer, who recently launched his first solo album Fitoor.
Chauhan began his career as the lead vocalist of the now-dissolved Silk Route band and achieved instant fame with the beautiful underwater track Dooba Dooba and other romantic melodies from the album Boondein.
His major break came when A R Rahman roped him in to sing Khoon Chala for Rang De Basanti. Since then, he has impressed music aficionados with songs like Tum Se Hi from Jab We Met, Kuchh Khaas from Fashion, Masakkali from Delhi 6 and Pehli Baar Mohabbat from Kaminey.
"When I composed for Dooba Dooba, I did it without any background and when I was studying science in college. I never thought I would become a singer someday. I was thinking to go into the army or join a corporate house, but after the song's success things changed forever," Chauhan said recalling his days of struggle.
The singer's first solo album Fitoor is a collection of ten songs under the Universal Music banner. It was released last week and the versatile singer is ready to start working on another album, to be released next year.
"I keep composing songs on my own even if no music director has told me to do so. I have been composing and working upon the songs in Fitoor for the past few years," he says adding the songs are build around life and the varied emotions that one comes across in life.
With no plans to venture into music composing, Chauhan says he is enjoying his present singing career.
"I take life as it comes and right now, I am just enjoying whatever I do now. I haven't seriously thought about turning into music composing, but I am getting such offers, " says the soft-spoken crooner.
Chauhan will next be heard in Rakesh Roshan's Kites, Shahid Kapoor starrer Dance pe Chance and Deepti Naval's debut film Do Paise Ki Dhoop Charaane ki Baarish.
