Textile Design student Laura Labrin, from East Brunswick, has won the Dreamweaver Design Award and has been named best student designer for 2009 in her category.
The annual award is a woven textiles competition sponsored by Warwick, an international textile company, for design students and graduates to showcase their talents on the world stage.
The competition aims to encourage students and emerging designers while promoting Australian textile design in local and overseas markets.
“I feel elated! It is a big achievement to win this award,” Ms Labrin said.
“I’ve always enjoyed making things. I learnt how to weave when I was in primary school. Back then it was the most basic and primitive way of weaving but there was something about making a fabric from scratch that was exciting.
“Fifteen years or so later it’s surreal to be rewarded for something you’ve always enjoyed. I’m very grateful for Warwick for providing this opportunity and for RMIT’s dedication to its students,” Ms Labrin said.
Entrants were required to design a woven upholstery fabric suitable for domestic furniture and make a presentation to a panel of industry representatives.
“I am not surprised they chose a student such as Laura to receive first prize,” Rachel Halton, Studio Textiles and Design teacher in RMIT University’s School of Fashion and Textile, said. “She is a deserving winner.”
Ms Labrin was chosen from three finalists and will have her fabric commercially woven at Bekaert Textiles, a world market leader in textile manufacturing.
She has also won the opportunity to travel to Belgium in September and experience the world’s largest upholstery exhibition, Decosit, fully sponsored by Warwick.
