Indian art students pay homage to victims of the tsunami that killed around 220,000 people on December 26, 2004, by creating sand art at Marina Beach in Tamil Nadu, southern India. Prayers and memorial services were held in the state, where an estimated 6,500 people died. In the Indonesian province of Aceh, the heaviest-hit region where at least 168,000 people were killed, crowds massed in the remains of a military base in the coastal town of Meulaboh for a sombre Islamic prayer ceremony. Around 50 homeless tsunami survivors protested after the ceremony, demanding housing and accusing authorities of failing to look after victims. Indonesia also held tsunami drills at the northern end of the island of Sulawesi and on Java.
