Mahesh Jayabalasubramanian, an Indian-origin chef based in Cadiff has won three industry prizes at an international chef competition for his sculptures made entirely of bread. Besides being an executive chef at Cardiff's Park Inn Hotel, Chennai-born Jayabalasubramabian is known for sculptures made of bread or dough. He created an intricate garden scene more than a foot in length and coloured with coffee. He bagged three industry prizes, at the Hotelympia Salon Culinaire International, the UK's largest internationally respected cheffing competition. Jayabalasubramabian told reporters: "Whenever I have time I do it little by little. When I look back on what I did when I first started it looks childlike to me. I've developed so much. I love doing things like this." Besides, he turns melons into flower decorations, makes marble-like statues from butter, creates pictures from sugar and cocoa, and giant ice sculptures. "When people see the photos of the things I've created they think I'm a full-time kitchen artist. They are surprised I'm an executive chef as well," he said. He was first awarded while working for a hotel chain in New Delhi, when he created a five-foot high butter statue of Hephaestos, the Greek god of fire.
