Learn more about: Anita Roy Chowdhury
Anita Roy Chowdhury was born on July 18, 1938 in a distinguished family of educated elite class professionals. As a girl she had shown her preferance for pencil, crayons and brush. She would spend hours sculpting figures of the Hindu Pantheon in clay. Her father was delighted to discover that among his studious and six daughters, Anita was exceptional. She was very imaginative and surprisingly innovative. After she finished school, her parents agreed to send her to Government College of Art and Craft, Calcutta.
In class she was fortunate enough to have such laterday distinguished artists as Dhiraj Choudhury, Sunil Das, Jogen Chowdhury, Arundhuti Roy Choudhury and Shyamasree Basu as her fellow students. She passed out of college with flying colours in 1960.
She joined the Society of Contemporary Artists in 1959 and the group arranged her first solo show in the year 1962 at their studio. Since that date she has had 10 solo exhibitions, (the present Birla Academy sponsored show is her eleventh), including the second in AIFACS, New Delhi, in 1963, Jehangir, Bombay, 1966, Sarala Art Centre, Madras 1969. From 1969 onwards she has been a member of "Calcutta Painters". Since her graduation she has participated in group shows and almost all major All India expositions in the metropolitan cities of India.
