Internationally acclaimed artist Julian Opie at Sakshi Gallery. Sakshi Gallery is proud to present works of the internationally acclaimed English contemporary artist, Julian Opie for the first time in India. Julian Opies crossover approach of distilling ideas and content to the minimum and yet saying so much, has received great acclaim and is reckoned to be highly instrumental in expanding the vocabulary of art.
His genius is widely acknowledged and testimony to this are the many exhibitions he has held in premier museums across the world including the British Museum, London; Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh; the Daimler Chrysler Collection, Berlin; the Daros Foundation, Zrich; IVAM, Valencia; MUSAC, Len; Museum of Modern Art, New York; MoMAT Tokyo; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; National Portrait Gallery, London; Stdtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Tate Collection, London and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Opies art revolves around the scrutiny of how we, as viewers, see things, especially in the present day when our sphere of living is being increasingly dominated by images. Through his works, he examines fundamental issues like the absolute minimum characteristics that represent a phenomenon, the intrinsic elements that convey a persons uniqueness, and how a mix of colors and line can manifest its personality.
Opies works are characterized by minimalist, reduced black contours filled with bright colors and set against monochromatic backgrounds. However, ironical to their flat, two-dimensional form, the pictograms have much depth, symbolically manifesting the reality of our life by making it readable like a signature. His works regularly transcend classical frames to be embodied as sculptures, murals, videos, light-boxes, vinyl pictures, LED and LCD screens.
Sakshi Gallery will be showcasing some of Opies popular works during the show including Ruth with cigarette, This is Shahnoza in 3 parts, Ruth smoking, Sara dancing in sparkly top, This is Shahnoza, and View from my hotel room.
