An Experiment With a Candle Flame

Light a candle, then hold a stiff piece of paper in the flame. Put it in position smartly and see that it is horizontal. It should be held rather low down in the flame. Two or three seconds will be long enough for the experiment for the experiment. At the end of this time, bring the paper away from the candle and examine the mark it has made. You will find that there is a circular ring on the paper, part of which is a scorch mark and the remainder is black with soot; but within the ring the paper is hardly changed. The piece of paper shows conclusively that a candle flame is alight only on the outside, and that inside it consists of substances that are not burnt.
