Bhangra - Folk dance of Punjab
[23 KB]

Bhangra got its start in a region called Punjab. This region is currently divided among India and Pakistan. It is called Punjab because of the five rivers that flow through the region: Jeelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej. The region is ideal for farming and is the breadbasket of India.

Bhangra appeared in Punjab hundreds of years ago. In the beginning it was sung during times of harvest to make the day go by quicker. However, presently it is played at joyous occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and other get togethers. There are numerous instruments that are used in Bhangra music including the bhangra dhol, tumbi, chemta, tabla and harmonium. In the past couple of decades the music has been mixed with techno, disco, hip hop, drum and bass, reggae and rap.

Bharatnatyam - A classical dance
[26 KB]

Bharatha Natyam is a composite art, whose message is not merely to the senses, but to the soul of the dancer and of the perceiver. This dance form cannot be adequately danced by anyone without reverence for technique and for spiritual life. All this is said with lucidity and ease in order to help audiences to become better spectators and dance students to bring a more self-conscious analytical approach to the movement of learning. Also, to support this movement of learning we would be defining the different stages of learning as in initiation, training and performance while paying a lot of attention to practise during these stages. All information presented are views of the academy on Bharatha Natyam and may be influenced by the great scholars and historians who are our friends and who have generously provided help and assistance in variety of ways.
