4to40.com/web
offers web site design solutions to US, India and "off shore" clients.

Good Web site design, we believe requires a unique amalgamation of programming expertise, design experience, writing abilities, understanding of users and knowledge of information system design.

Interestingly, 'web site' is very much a catch-all phrase now. One refers to a set of five HTML documents at a domain as a web site and one also refers to a highly interactive, database driven, information mine with a million documents as a web site. That is the reason we suggest a comprehensive pre-implementation brief. What is the objective of the exercise and what are the expectations, are two very basic questions that must be answered before any plan can be implemented. It is necessary to have the objectives ambitious, but realistic and achievable.

We consider it part of our job to help clients define objectives and expectations. Towards this end we offer potential clients one "free" consultation meeting. To fix it, please write into feedback form or  e-mail us.

Our experience shows that web site design solutions can vary a lot - both in term of scope of work and the costs involved. Consider some of the following issues:

  • Will the site require original content creation?
  • Will it be an adaptation of existing communications?
  • Does the company already have a well-defined Corporate Identity Programme, for the web solution to borrow from?
  • Is it a new company which requires us to implement a Corporate Identity plan?
  • Is the organization ready for a long term Electronic Business Strategy - ready to become "market facing" and integrate the web into how business is conducted.

Most organisations would need to - in the long run - devise individualized web strategies. Work closely with service providers like us to evolve a unique solution. We are ready for it when you are. Get in touch with us to set up an exploratory meeting - with no obligations!

But our experience also shows that very often, especially in India, organisations wish to ride the learning curve and are not ready for the deep end.

We have  devised three pre-configured plans which should take care of most of the requirements of organisations wishing to gradually scale up their web strategies. These plans are scalable, modular and can even grow with your requirements.

Web Invite: This is essentially an initiation site. It establishes a web presence, and dissipates information to whoever reaches the site.

Web Extend: This plan makes a serious effort at web presence and the organisation can provide detailed information about its products and services. For a company with a limited number of products/services this plan can even set up a basic shopping area.

Looking for a more complex solution:  We would love to design a solution that is specific to your needs. We have implemented solutions which are vastly complex in scope, technologies and require original programming. Please visit our designed sites / projects, which are clearly visible visiting

and some Web Archival Section projects using dynamic display of text files for

IOCTANE : The US Sports Magazine Archival Section
Business Standard : A daily Newspaper's Archival

Note :
1.   http://www.4to40.com / http://www.softwarefolks.com are text driven dynamic websites, these sites uses Site Search, Dynamic web page creation on fly using *.txt files as the database. One of the main advantage of using text files as records is saving server charges for the Database at server cum the execution time for ASP Query is very less.

2.  Even a 200KB size of data from *.txt files can be displayed within 10 seconds to download the each page. Check http://www.4to40.com/Jokes/   which displays a text file of size 149KB (as on date 10/21/01) and growing.

3.   NT Server required, which allows ASP file execution.

4.  We feels very comfortable in creating expandable websites, which fit in all the resolutions like 640 X 480, 800 X 600 and 1024 X 764 resolutions.

to get a feel of some. If you need a solution that we have never implemented before, we'd really love the challenge. Please write us or mail us your requirements and we'll try and device a plan that suits your requirements.

We can work with a specific brief to create a web  design solution that works for your specific needs.

Please get in touch with us and we will create a plan just right for you.

If you need clarification about some of the terminology, features or words, please visit: An introduction to web terminology.

If you need a specific combination of features please do get in touch with us for a custom solution.

Optional / Additional design cost for your web site as per requirements: The additional costs may help tune a package to meet some specific requirements:

.

Additional HTML / ASP Pages

Text / image changes in existing page

Image scanning / optimization

Other simple form / feedback

Additional counter

Drop down navigation / CGI

Java scroller

Logo design

Search engine  updates

As explained earlier, all the costs will be given to client, are based on the assumption that the client will provide basic contents / text for the site, and we will edit  rewrite it. We can also create the content from scratch based on discussions, existing brochures, leaflets, profiles etc., but this would entail an additional cost.

Terms of payment for all web design jobs are as follows:

  • 50% of design fee as advance on commencement of work

  • 25% of design fee on approval of basic site design, structure and thematic approach

  • 25% (balance payment) after the site has been uploaded, tested. Search engine submission takes three to four months, being a slow process we can not guarantee our clients about their appearance on the seach engine listing.

An introduction to internet terminology : Following is the explanation of the features/words listed in our design section. Some of these are standard terms used across the industry, while some others are specific to what we offer .

HTML Pages
These are the actual content pages, that a visitor to the site gets to see ( they typically have an extension of '*.htm' or '*.html' or '*.asp' ). There are other pages on the web site which the visitor doesn't get to see, but exist to either run some programmes, ( typically with an extension of '.cgi' or '.pl' and sometimes '.asp' or text files) or to store some data / text etc. For the purpose of costing we will include all viewable pages, that is, with extensions of '.htm' , '.html' and .'asp'.

Images
This is the count of images on the web site (typically with an extension of '.gif' or '.jpg'). Sometimes we will break up an image into more than one constituent part for technical reasons, in which case it will still be counted as one image.

Navigation buttons
These are images used as buttons to facilitate navigation, and maintain a certain aesthetics.

Image Maps
Sometimes specific areas of one image are linked to different pages on the site, and they replace a bunch of separate buttons. A site could use both image maps and buttons.

Feedback form
This is the simplest means to make a web site interactive. A visitor is 'generally' limited to only viewing information on most typical sites. A feedback form gives the visitor an option of 'talking back' , let's say to tell us that the site was liked, or to express a desire for buying the products/services displayed. There are many other ways to make a web site interactive, as we will discover below.

Page counter
This is a way to keep track of the number of visitors on a specific page. More specifically, it is a way of telling the world how many people have visited a specific page. Which, incidentally, can be a big problem for a not so popular site. This should be used with caution. In case of doubt we advise against using it, since there are other ways of finding out the number of visitors to specific pages.

Hidden counters
This is a way to keep a count of visitors to a specific page, without letting the whole world know the figure - which can be a big problem for not so popular sites.

Drop down navigation
This is a programme that enables packing in a lot of navigation options in a small space. The visitor can select a link from a drop down menu to go to the specified page. When not being used the list folds up and occupies very little space on a page, freeing it for other content.

Scrolling text
Text that crawls on a page from one side to another and attracts attention to itself. Can be used to convey something very important or urgent. This can also be distracting so it must be used with discretion.

Site search
Research shows that people are invariably in a hurry to find what they are looking for. A search can be a very useful function, especially in larger, multi-layered sites.

Voting booth
There are times when you want visitors to express their opinion on some issues - cast their vote. A good voting booth can generate and display a run-time graph, which includes the latest vote. It will also prevent misuse of multiple voting which can skew the results. (This is another way of making a site more interactive.) 4to40.com can provide results in the histogram form also.

Chat
This is a programme that allows two or more people, who are simultaneously logged on to a page, to literally talk to each other. The browsers of all the people will display the text that one person types in. Apart from fun, a password protected chat can be used as a virtual meeting of let's say, dealers across the world. (Another way of making a site more interactive.)

Slide Show
This is a programme that can present material to visitors, sequentially with or without a timer, or it can allow the user to choose the slide to be viewed. Incidentally, the slide doesn't have to be a picture, a mix of text and images can be used. This function is specially useful for presenting related material sequentially or otherwise.

Guest Book
A virtual guest book allows people to leave behind their comments for the world to see. A new visitor can see what comments other people have left and add his/her own.

Search Engine submission
Search engines are the essential tools for finding anything on the rapidly growing ocean of web sites on the Internet. Even though there are more than 200 engines out there, six or seven of them matter the most. Even though the actual submission process is not very complex - we have designed a tool that automatically submits a web page to leading search engines. It is the methodology of getting your site 'search engine' ready, that is a constantly evolving art.

Search Engine Referral (with keywords)
If search engines are important traffic generators for the site - which is almost always the case - then it is important to know which engine is generating how much traffic, and what are the words people are searching on. This program keeps track of just these things.

Detailed page log
Detailed statistics of a web site provides a very definitive feedback. And a good stats programme can be a valuable tool for improving and capitalising on existing strengths. There are times when it is important to know the order of page viewing - which page do most visitors start with, go through and exit from, how much time do they spend on each page and so on.

Search Engine Update
Search engines are the Internet's yellow pages. Most sites are discovered when an individual searches the engine for some 'keywords'. Typically, Alta Vista or any other engine may list over 100,000 sites for most searches. Obviously, it helps if your site is among the top few listed against a search.

Different search engines use different methodologies for 'indexing' sites - the same site will get listed at a different number in different engines - when searching with the same 'key words'. What's worse is that this methodology is not so obvious and keeps changing. Add to this, the fact that new sites are being added to the index, which may be better indexed than yours, and some older sites may be working hard to improve their rankings. What this means is that effort is required to just maintain a rank. And this can be a significant effort.

We believe that the single-minded objective of all design - including web design - is communication
. That design should not call attention to itself, nor should the technology.

A conscious effort has to be made to resist the desire to show-off design/programming skills. If it requires ASP, Flash, Java, DHTML, JavaScript or whatever else, then so be it. But not otherwise.

The most critical aspect is to use the available technologies to create an interactive experience that goes beyond the conventional uni-directional sales pitch.

What is our specialty?

Strategic integration of the web into how the organisation does business. We are strategy driven rather than technology or design driven. Sure, we take pride in our technology and design abilities, but these, we believe, are essential components, of the strategy. But they are "components", and not the whole.

While we can deliver almost any kind of solution, there are some special skills we have developed over the years:

  • Large Data Intensive Sites:
We are especially equipped to handle very large data intensive sites. An associate company is in the Data Entry business. It exports very large amounts of data to the US and the rest of the world with a guaranteed accuracy of 99.99%. We use their services for keying in large data.

This allows us to build database-driven and/or static sites. We can also use this data to design and generate PDF files.

To view an example of a large data-base driven web solution (includes huge amounts of PDFs) please visit http://www.itpindia.com/

  • News / Newsletters / E-zines:
We have the experience of designing and implementing newsletters with crazy deadlines. A prime example of this is available at http://www.pitara.com/ ( this is a children's web site updated every week with original content )

  • Original Content Creation:
We have in-house ability to generate content on almost any subject on earth. Our editorial team includes people with writing experiences in diverse fields. The content editor is a journalist by training and used to work for India's largest and most respected business daily, The Economic Times.

  • Image manipulation:
We have handled large-scale image scanning / conversion jobs for a demanding international (US) client. We can use the experience to design image-intensive sites.

Free hand Drawings / Sketches / Caricatures / Cartoons / Maps can be drawn / created on requirement. The graphic images / sketches are on display at http://www.4to40.com and http://www.pitara.com

Our Tech / design abilities:
We work towards a holistic solution, trying to arrive at that perfect balance between technology and design to create the optimum strategic advantage.

Technologies:
We have the resources to offer complete solutions, and will do whatever it takes to implement a design solution that meets the agreed design brief:

  • HTML/DHTML
  • Custom Scripting Java, Flash, JavaScript, ASP etc.
  • Large scale database creation
  • Large scale PDF generation

Design:
Our design studio is well equipped with the latest technology and we like to do almost everything in-house:

  • Image scanners
  • High-end workstations for image manipulation
  • Graphic design
